Bathroom

The bathroom needed a lot of work.

There was a bathtub, but no shower.  The faucet dripped.  The pipes were all cast iron.  Carpet covered the floor.  Painted aluminum tiles were missing in some spots.

The propane furnace and water heater used this brick chimney for a vent pipe.  It was lined with a clay flue, so it was probably safe, but we aren't fans of propane.
There was quite a bit of water damage around the chimney.  The plaster and paint were ready to fall off.  At some point, the seal between the roof and chimney apparently failed.  Since we were converting the house to electric, we eradicated the chimney.

The sink was very small.  There weren't any grounded outlets; the only receptacle was a single plug-in on the medicine cabinet.  The water pipe for an exterior faucet came up through the bathroom floor and out the wall.  You can see it below and to the right of the sink.

The toilet was in great condition and relatively new.  It is the only thing we reused in the bathroom.  The single-pane window was teeny tiny and let in cold air.

Here are some demolition shots with the tile pulled off and some of the plaster removed.

None of the original plumbing fixtures were vented.  We corrected that problem.  Because of the way the house was originally constructed, we needed to build a dummy 2x4 wall next to the existing wall to accomodate the PVC pipes.

Here's the new bathroom!

With the chimney out of the way, we were able to add a 48" vanity.  We replaced the medicine cabinet with a large mirror and two GFCI receptacles.  The door is a 36" right hand door instead of a 30" left hand door.

The vanity adds nice storage and great counter space.  The new tile looks awesome, and is much more practical than the carpet was.

The angle isn't quite the same in the before and after shown above, but it gives you an idea of what that corner looks like with the door open.

Now people can take a bath or a shower!  The space where shelves used to be is now home to two linen cabinets, built into a recess in the hallway.

The bathroom update also includes new lighting and a vent fan.  The towels are scuzzy, so don't look at those.  We were still in cleaning mode when we took these photos; we'll hang the "company towels" as soon as we own some.
